Earth Day 22 April – Non-Uniform Day

To mark and celebrate Earth Day on 22 April, Primary and Senior students are asked to come to school dressed in blue and/or green with a KRW 2000 donation to spotlight the day. Money raised will go to Chungnam Wildlife Rescue Center in Chungcheongnam-do (more information can be found here), an organisation that rehabilitates injured wild animals. The theme of Earth Day is Planet vs Plastic, highlighting the harm that plastic production is doing to our planet and the need to reduce rather than recycle plastic waste. With only 9% of plastics recycled globally due to contamination and profitability, the need to take action is now.

For the week of Earth Day, students, parents and staff will be challenged to go without using single-use plastic items, such as water bottles, cutlery, straws, balloons, takeaway containers, bags, coffee cups, etc.

Student Hair Donations Make a Difference

Louis (Year 6) has twice donated his hair to support cancer patients. Louis’s generous donations have helped young individuals coping with the side effects of cancer treatment. Excellent initiative, Louis!

My name is Louis and I have donated my hair to cancer patients twice. The first time was once October 8, 2022 and once on March 27, 2024. My recent donation was to Korea Social Contribution Foundation. Each time, I donated over 25 centimeters of hair. I wanted to help young cancer patients with no hair to once again have hair. Cancer is a terrible disease, and one other bad thing is lots of people lose hair from cancer. It is not fun for a kid with no hair. Sometimes people get bullied because they lost their hair. I am going to donate my hair once more once I have grown it to the right length.

Aiden’s Violin Recital

Last Sunday, Aiden, an IBDP student, presented a violin recital featuring a mix of classical pieces, original compositions, and renditions of Korean classics. The performance was well-received, showcasing Aiden’s musical abilities. Congratulations, Aiden!

Lia and Karam Complete 580km Cycling Journey to Busan

We are proud to celebrate the stunning achievement of Karam (Year 6) and Lia (Year 9), who embarked on a marathon cycling journey from their home in Seoul to Busan during the Easter break. Karam and Lia, accompanied by their parents, covered an impressive distance of approximately 580km over five and a half days, averaging more than 100km per day.

The family’s journey was filled with challenges, including the daunting climb over Yihwaryong, a mountain that stands 548m above sea level with a 5.6km stretch at an average inclination of nine degrees. Karam and Lia’s determination shone through as they refused to dismount their bicycles until they reached the summit.

Despite facing torrential rain on day four, the Nelson family persevered, covering a remarkable 120km from Daegu to Yangsan. Along the way, they followed a picturesque path along the Miryang River, lined with beautiful cherry blossoms on both sides, adding a touch of beauty to their challenging ride.

Throughout their journey, Karam and Lia displayed exceptional resilience, determination, and a positive, can-do attitude in the face of every obstacle. They embodied the pioneering spirit of Dulwich College Seoul, and we are very proud of their accomplishment. Well done!

Counsellor’s Corner

As it does, the time has come for our Year 13 students to sit their examinations and, soon enough, graduate. It is a time of extremely mixed emotions: from pressure to relief, from sadness to joy, from fear to excitement, and everything between.

Next week, students will take the important step of study leave. Although they are not leaving us for good, they will be transitioning to a new schedule and routine. While they will be relying on their ever-developing independence, it is important they remember that they can still depend on us through this time. As always, we, their teachers will be there to support them through this academic and examination process, while also being people they can talk to. The counsellors, myself and Ms Gen, will also be available during study leave. If they have a worry or concern that they would like to speak about to one of us about in a confidential and non-judgemental space, they can reach out to us via email (joseph.dekens@dulwich-seoul.kr; genevieve.kung@dulwich-seoul.kr) or in Teams chat. We are also happy to speak to parents about their child’s social-emotional needs.

Further on down the road, our Year 13 students will actually be leaving us for good (don’t worry, they can still visit). Some Year 13 students have told me that leaving school is like leaving their home-away-from-home. Leaving home and your second home does present challenges. For any social-emotional needs that students may have, here is a list of resources (including helplines) in Seoul that may be useful. When they arrive at their next destination and find themselves in need of someone to talk to, they should not hesitate to visit the counsellors’ office at their new university or the local counselling office in the location they might find themselves in. In case of an urgent need, they can search online to find the help-line of the country they are in.

For general well-being going forward, it’s important to keep open lines of communication with family and friends that might be leaving. I am sure that person will appreciate the familiar face or voice on the other end. I encourage students to keep up healthy and active routines and habits and take chances with new ones. They should keep an open mind, but remember to trust their gut. Lastly, it’s important to work hard wherever they go, and to cherish the present moment. We wish them well.

Dulwich College Seoul Guidelines for Drop-off and Pick-up

We kindly ask that our community adhere to the following guidelines to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our students, parents and staff.

Dos:

  1. Follow Staff Directions: Adhere to the instructions of our traffic control staff wearing reflective vests for safety and efficiency.
  1. Quick and Efficient Drop-off/Pick-up: Limit your stop to the time needed for children to enter or exit the vehicle. Avoid getting out of your car and use the underground car park if you need to stop for more than a minute.
  1. Prioritize Pedestrians: Always give pedestrians, especially children, the right of way when crossing the street. Drive slowly with caution and be prepared to stop.
  1. Respect Traffic Rules: Obey all traffic signs and road markings. Do not make illegal turns or ignore yellow lines.
  1. Help Drivers to Focus: Place your pet at a safe distance from the driver as it could be dangerous if the pet makes any sudden moves.
  1. Use Alternative Spots for Call Taxis: Avoid rush hour and arrange for pickup away from the school’s main entrance as taxis waiting for passengers often disrupt traffic.
  1. Be Courteous: Treat other parents, staff, and students with kindness and respect.

Don’ts:

  1. Don’t Block Traffic: Avoid double parking or stopping in a way that obstructs traffic flow.
  1. Don’t Use Your Phone: Refrain from using your mobile phone while in the school zone.
  1. Don’t Park Illegally: Do not park on or near pedestrian crossings and do not leave your car unattended at any time. Fines will be charged by traffic police.
  1. Don’t Rush: Avoid speeding and hurried maneuvers in the school zone.
  1. No Hagwon Shuttles Allowed: Hagwon (private academies) shuttle buses are not allowed to stop and pick up students in front of the school. Refrain from having students be picked up by Hagwon shuttles from school.

From the Nurse Team:

If your child requires medication for an illness during school hours, please refer to the school medication policy outlined below.

[Medication Policy]

  • Children requiring medication for an illness should stay at home until they have fully recovered. If your child is essentially well but needs to continue with a day or two of treatment, the medication may be sent to school. In such cases, it is crucial that you provide us with precise details and the following documents:
    1. Complete the ‘Medication Permission Slip’ (to be filled out by the parent): download it from the parent portal.
    2. Provide a doctor’s prescription or send a picture of the pharmacy envelope.
  • Send the documents to the nurse’s office (via email or in person).
  • Please inform the class teacher by email, and your child will be directed to the nurse’s office to take the medicine.
  • Medication handover: Under no circumstances should students carry medicine on campus, including on the school bus. Therefore, kindly hand over any medicine directly to the nurse’s office or to the bus monitor along with the required documents.

For any queries, please contact us at Nurse@dulwich-seoul.kr or call 02.3015.8520.
