Senior School

What an incredible week it has been. Filled with creativity, engagement, and a strong sense of community the final week of Term 2.

Our Spring Recital was a showcase of incredible talent! Our students took center stage, dazzling us with their musical prowess across a wide range of instruments, genres, and experience levels. We extend a heartfelt thank you to Mark Knights and the dedicated music department for nurturing these budding virtuosos. The summer recital will take place on 20 June 2024.

The Parent Rep Meeting on Wednesday was a wonderful opportunity to connect with fellow parents and engage in meaningful discussions. We were delighted to welcome Pete Poulton, Director of Sports, who addressed sports, swimming, and plans for the upcoming year. Pete and the team have been using your feedback to ensure we are offering a range of sporting opportunities for students. Most notably next term swim squad training will be available for Senior School students on Friday’s from 3.30-4.30pm, private lessons will be each day from 4.30pm. Please read the minutes for more information.

We finished the week with the World Book Week Extravaganza. The campus was transformed into a magical realm as students donned enchanting costumes to celebrate Book Day. From Captain underpants to Wizard of Oz and Robin Hood’s shadow, the staff and student creativity knew no bounds. Book Day not only sparked joy but also underscored the importance of literacy in our children’s lives; fostering a love for reading and storytelling, and igniting imaginations

This week in assembly our theme was celebrating success. All the students at the Olympiad were commended by the other staff and students for their kindness and compassions, alongside the multitude of personal and group achievements the following students received awards for the DCSG values;

  • Aiden Year 12  and Michael Year 8 for their determination
  • Stella Year 7 and Sabina Year 7 for their courage
  • Oliver (Year 10)  and Joshua (Year 12) for skill
  • Kiyoon (Year 12) and Jisung (Year 12) for their graciousness.

In academics several students competed in the exceptionally challenging Chemistry Olympiad. Well done to the Year 13 students Youngsoo, Andrea and Eugene and Year 11 students Ryan and Jaewook.

House Activities

With so many of our students away at the Olympiad last week and our Year 11 and Year 13 students preparing for their upcoming study leave, we thought last Friday offered a great opportunity to take a step back from the intensity of our academic program and jump into a day of Global Citizenship, Sustainability and House-themed events.

We started our House and GC day with a fun warm-up activity – ‘The five-Min Challenge’. The idea was to take typical classroom distractions and viral games like ‘bottle flipping’, ‘coin sliding’ and ‘paper plane throwing’ and twist them into a competitive House challenge. With each challenge having a five minute timer; students raced against the clock and each other to ‘flip cups’, ‘slide coins’, ‘fly planes’, and ‘solve puzzles’. It was a fun start to the day, something a bit different, and got everyone in the mood for a day of extra-curricular competition.

The next part of our House and GC day was focused around student agency. Students were able to choose from a huge range of activities and essentially build their own timetable for the day. We offered some competitive thinking competitions like chess and computer game tournaments. We also offered some mindfulness activities such as fingerpainting and poetry writing. Finally, students could also choose some physical and outdoor events like dodgeball and gardening. So many students in Senior School came to tell us how amazing it was to be in charge of what they studied for the day and they really appreciated a chance to show off their non-academic skills.

In the final part of the day, we offered even more choice to our Senior School students and asked them to choose what Enrichment they wanted to take part in – ‘Senior School House Sports’, ‘Literary Hero Research’ or ‘Gardening and Sustainability’.

Some students chose to take part in Senior School House Sports and competed in a range of events such as basketball, T-ball and bench-ball. We are still tallying up the House scores but I know it the results are looking pretty close! Some students chose to take part in an academic research task in which the English department challenged them to find a famous figure from literature who could be the ‘Literary Hero’ for their respective Houses. Students are still currently in the process of making a display for each Literary Hero that will be put up on the 4th floor of Senior School but we are looking forward to seeing their finished work!

Finally, the last Enrichment choice was perhaps the most interesting of the day. Many of students chose to work with Mr Tosdevin on a long-term sustainability project to improve the green spaces around our school. Students worked alongside special guest, Ryan Phillips from ‘Bear Foot Gardens’ as they tested soil quality, dug flower beds, planted seeds and set up out new greenhouse, ready for spring!

In our humble opinion, we think the House and GC day was an amazing success. Sometimes it is important for everyone to step back from the rigour and challenge of constant academic progress and appreciate all the other skills, hobbies and talents we have as learners. This day was inspired by our love for competition, mindfulness and sustainability and offered our students a chance to show off their passion and creativity in a range of fun ways. Most importantly, so much of the day was about ‘student choice’, we gave students the power to design their dream day at school and looking at the photos on show, it is clear they really made the most of it!

Best,

Mr Welsby, Mr Allen, Mr Tosdevin and The House Leadership Team
