Primary School

Dear Primary Families,

Final Assembly of the Term:

As is now tradition, we hold a massive and rather lively assembly for all of the Primary community – students, staff and families gathered together to share learning and celebrate successes. We celebrated students’ many achievements in reading (in English and Mandarin), skipping, House Points, music and singing! Sadly due to an issue with the microphones, we delayed the The Book Quiz on Padlett to the afternoon but great fun was still had.

Year 4 Celebration of Learning: Protests!

Year 4 welcomed their families into school on Wednesday to see their artwork and learning around the concept of ‘protest’. Through IC, the children have been developing their understanding of what protest is and why people have needed to protest. The recent artwork skillfully demonstrated their increasingly complex understanding of this powerful force. Thank you to those parents able to come along to support our young activists.

Year 6 Residential in Hong Kong:

This Friday marks the end of a very successful, very adventurous week for our Year 6 students. The students are fortunate enough to have learnt a plethora of outdoor skills which will be incredibly useful for their Year 7 Adventurous Journey. The students have also shown great resilience and developed stronger ties as a closeknit community. Each of them will have unique stories to share about their experiences when they return home. A few may have bumps, bruises and mosquito bites, but these will fade quickly as the students will retell their experiences for years to come. Well done, Year 6, we are very proud!

Primary School PTCs

Many thanks to families for engaging so energetically with the PTCs in recent days. Staff have greatly enjoyed sharing updates on your children’s learning and development so that you can partner with us even more closely to ensure their success.

Should you wish to catch up with staff regarding any matters raised or with new questions, then please drop them an email to set up an in-person or online appointment.

Year 2 Production:

The last week of the Spring Term of 2024 was a momentous occasion for DUCKS 2 children. After weeks of practices and rehearsals, they all had an opportunity to shine like glittering stars in the College Auditorium. Over the weeks, they prepared and collaborated as a year group to tell a story to share with family and friends – The Unexpected Visitor by J. Courtney Tickle. Through theatre, they were allowed to step into the life of a fish harvester who lived alone on an island. On Thursday, the children performed for their families and were complimented for teamwork, speaking clearly on stage and creating a confident performance. Through dialogue and actions, they communicated the story’s message – make friends, share and care for the creatures in our oceans.

We Love Languages, We Love Stories:

If you are travelling this vacation (or on any other), please consider allowing your child to pick out a storybook/picture book in your ‘mother tongue’ (home language) or a dual-language book to donate to the Inquiry Hub’s international book collection. Mr Burrows will stick a special bookplate in your donated book with your family name and child’s details for all to see. A little piece of your home language will be in our growing international collection for your child to enjoy now, and for others to enjoy too in the years to come.

Book Day 2024

We celebrated the end of term with our school’s Book Day on Friday. The children dressed up beautifully as characters from a range of books and enjoyed various activities throughout the day. We announced the winners of the Readathon and engaged in a quiz against teachers and parents to determine who has the best knowledge of children’s literature. Well done, everyone, for reading so much this year!

What’s Hiding in Your Closet?

Have your child accidentally brought other people’s clothing or belongings home from school (it happens!)? If so, please send them back to school so we can pop them into Lost Property. Many thanks for your caring* and principled* thoughtfulness! (IB Learner Profile Dispositions that we all strive for).

  • Un-named DCSL uniform will be donated to FoD for their very popular used-uniform sales.
  • Names items continue to be returned to families.

Is Your Child Using Disrespectful Language?:

We have noticed an increase in a small minority of students using offensive and even racist language in conversation with others and towards others. We take any sort of offensive and racist comments very seriously indeed, and will meet with parents and put sanctions in place for students who intentionally use upsetting words, which can include suspension from school. With children, who are still learning about living respectfully in a diverse world, these rare instances are used as a learning opportunities so we can all be better members of the human race. We also use our assemblies, class work and PSHE to discuss topics such as diversity, equity and inclusion to ensure all our students have the skills and knowledge needed to be people of good character as they grow up.

We urge parents to proactively:

  • monitor their children’s online use to ensure they are not accessing graphic and inappropriate videos, movies, clips and sites
  • Ensure older siblings, friends and relatives are modelling good examples to our children
  • Buy books and borrow library books which reflect the diverse and beautiful nature of the global family
  • Challenge their children’s disrespectful descriptions of others
  • As adults, always model respectful and inclusive behaviours, as children are taking their cue from us.

Ducklings Baby and Toddler Group:

Parent/Child Morning Mingles – save the dates!

Given the great success of our past breakfast events (Pastries with Parents etc.), we will have “Morning Mingles” in Term 3, where parents/carers are invited into school for a 7.45am breakfast event hosted by their child’s year group. We will start with Year 6 in April and the Year 6s will serve and care for their adults with drinks and delicious homemade items. From 8.30am – 9am parents will be invited up to class on work alongside their child on a project. A campus tour with a senior school focus will then be offered.

Parent Workshop Ideas:

If there is a workshop that you think we could run, please let your Rep or Mrs Smith know! Thank in advance for some fresh, new ideas!

Over the next few months, we will see Year 6 go to Hong Kong, Year 3 explore Chuncheon and our Year 1 and Year 2 students participate in a backyard adventure in Seoul.

Adventurous Journey Expectations:

The Adventurous Journey is an integral part of our curriculum, and we are thrilled to offer this enriching experience to our students. As such, we kindly remind you that participation is mandatory for all students. It is an opportunity for them to learn, grow, and create lasting memories. It’s important to note that if your child does not to participate in the Adventurous Journey, there will be no alternative lessons or provision available at school during this time. Additionally, they will not be able to come to the College Campus until the completion of the Adventure Journey.

During the Adventurous Journey, we have certain expectations of our students:

Full Engagement: We expect all students to actively participate in the sessions and activities planned.

Respectful Behaviour: We ask that students behave respectfully and responsibly, just as they would within the school premises.

Enjoyment: Above all, we want our students to have fun and make the most of this unique learning opportunity.

Medical Records Update:

Ensuring the safety and well-being of our students is our top priority. As part of our preparations, we kindly request that you review and update your child’s medical records with any relevant information. This will help us to better support your child’s needs and provide appropriate care during the Adventurous Weeks.
