Andrea K Takes Grand Prize at Genius Olympiad 2023

We are proud to share the extraordinary achievement of our very own Year 12 student, Andrea K. She recently secured the coveted Grand Prize at the Genius Olympiad 2023, a global high school competition that celebrates the creativity and scientific prowess of young minds. She went up against 688 high-calibre science projects from gifted young minds globally, and her project won the ‘Grand 1st Prize’ in the Science Category.

Andrea’s project revolved around creating a cost-effective and highly reproducible method for producing Blood-Brain Barrier (BBB) models using a 3D Bioprinter. In doing so, she aimed to make the study of the brain and BBB more accessible to researchers worldwide.

Taking it a step further, Andrea also used a mechanism involving small interfering RNA (siRNA) to potentially block the metastasis of brain cancers. This was especially meaningful because brain cancers are more prone to metastasis than other types of cancer.

The inspiration for Andrea’s project came from her personal experiences. “Cancer is prevalent in my family, so I’ve always been drawn to cancer biology,” she shared.

Recognising that brain cancers are less studied due to the difficulties posed by the BBB, she resolved to tackle two significant issues: the accessibility of BBB models and the propensity of brain cancers for metastasis.

Andrea credits Dulwich College Seoul for playing a crucial role in her achievement. The intricate knowledge she gained from studying human anatomy and the behaviour of diseases like cancer in her IB Higher Level Biology class provided an essential foundation for her research project. She also lauded the hands-on experience she gained from regular experimental work in the College’s science labs.

Perhaps the most significant element of her journey was the strong support from her teachers at Dulwich. In particular, her IB Biology teacher, Ms Vestermark, proved to be a valuable mentor throughout her research journey, providing essential feedback on her research manuscript before her final submission.

Andrea’s victory at the Genius Olympiad 2023 showcases the diverse talents of our students and the strong support our school offers in guiding them towards their goals. We extend our warmest congratulations to Andrea on this significant accomplishment and look forward to seeing what she will achieve in the future.

Dragon Boat Festival Celebration

The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as the Duanwu Festival (端午节), is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar, and this year falls on Thursday, 22 June 2023. The festival was originally initiated to pay tribute to a famous Chinese poet named Qu Yuan (340BC-278BC).

During Mandarin lessons throughout this week, students actively engaged in a diverse range of enjoyable activities to foster an understanding of the traditions and customs of the Dragon Boat Festival. These activities include researching the festival’s information, making various crafts, and making Zongzi, the traditional food of the Dragon Boat Festival.

The celebration activities brought joy to everyone while cultivating a deeper understanding of the culture.

Summer Works Highlights

We are excited to share a few highlights from our planned improvements over the summer to enhance our students’ learning experience. There are a total of nine areas throughout the college undergoing renovation including the main reception, bus and waiting areas in the foyer, nurse’s office, gym changing rooms and the Senior School library.

The main reception will be moved to face visitors upon entry and the current reception area will be transformed into a beautiful waiting area inspired by traditional Korean architecture. Our Nurse’s Office will be renewed to give more privacy during treatment. We will be introducing a babies and parents’ room next to the Nurse’s Office to accommodate families with small children. The changing rooms in the gym will have improved stalls and booths for students wanting more privacy.

We are looking forward to our new slide connecting the foyer to the dining hall. We are most excited about our new IB Centre, adjacent to a renewed Senior School library. Designed by Seoul National University architect John Hong who designed our award-winning Primary School’s Inquiry Hub, the new space will be a hub for our IBDP students to go learn, collaborate, and relax. The IB Centre will feature a diverse set of flexible seating options to study quietly or collaborate in groups, with a coffee station that students will manage themselves.

Friends of Dulwich (FoD) Gala Proceeds to Red Cross

We are proud to share that all the proceeds that were made from the Silent Art Auction at FoD Gala 2023 have been donated to the Red Cross to help families and children who were affected by the devastating earthquake in Turkey early this year. None of it would have been possible without the generosity shown by the teachers, students and parents who spared their time, talents and hearts to make this happen. Thank you again and we look forward to another year with you.

College logo usage

We ask that parents who would like to design and produce goods using our College logo and/or crest contact our marketing department at least two months in advance of an event. Our crest and logo is the visual representation of our long tradition, history and exceptional education. As such, our brand guide policy requires us to protect our brand’s look and feel, which means we don’t share the logo files with anyone but the vendor producing the goods. As a general rule, please note that we do not allow our logo or crest to be used for non-College or unofficial events. We will evaluate each request and reserve the right to decline if deemed misaligned with our brand. In addition to properly evaluating each request for logo use, having enough lead time allows us to, once approved, ensure the design submitted by the parent or vendor is aligned with our brand guidelines. We often need to make adjustments to the design to ensure vendors represent our branding correctly since they often inadvertently make mistakes due to their unfamiliarity with our branding guidelines. Thank you for your cooperation on this matter.
