Senior School

The Fall Ball on Saturday 18 November was a lovely opportunity for students to socialise, connect and dance! Thank you to Ella H and Eleanor S who organised the event and all the students and staff who decorated and tidied up afterwards. A particularly thank you to our parent chaperones.

The winter recital was yet another excellent example of the diverse talents and skills our students possess. From violins, to singing, piano, flute and electric guitar; commitment, skill and passion was evident. Thank you to the Music department for organising an opportunity for students to develop their confidence and performance skills. I cannot wait for the Winter Concert next Friday, 1 December.

Today we had the privilege of awarding the IGCSE and GCSE certificates to the class of 2025 and Year 11 students who completed, with great success, early entry Mandarin and Mathematics. We achieved excellent GCSE results, and the cohort should be extremely proud of the successes they earned; collectively the year group were extremely learning-focused, diligently prepared and revised for their examination in the May-June 2023 sitting. The Head students Aiden, Amirtha, Connie and Somi eloquently reflected on the last two years, reminded us of our perseverance and resilience and insulated us for our current journey through the IB.

Our Year 12 IBDP students are preparing for the Collaborative Science project next week. This is an opportunity to explore a theme, this year water and sustainability, as a group of scientists. Chemists, physicist, biologists and environmental scientists combine their different perspectives and knowledge to explore the theme. We look forward to sharing the outcomes next week.

It is always a pleasure to meet with the Parent Reps and discuss ideas. This week we talked again about how we can bring the community together and how we can encourage parents to use the Parent Reps as a conduit. The social events have been very popular, the Year 12 parent meal and the upcoming “Year 10 Dad and anyone else” event will be a fun event. Please reach out to Shane Hong (koguryoman@hotmail.com) and Patrizia Lissoni (chiodopatrizia@gmail.com) if you would like more details. There is also a plea from Joisen Year 9 Rep, for more parents to join the parent social group, email her for details.

The Reps feedback that iSAMS is not always easy to navigate, so on 1 December at 8.30am Gareth Thomas, our Director of Technology, will run a Parent Workshop focusing on iSAMS navigation and e-safety at home. Korean translation will be available during the workshop as well. In the final week of the term, we invite Year 12 and 13 parents to an IB panel discussion with Emma Chamberlain, IB Coordinator and Philosophy, UCC and myself to answer all the questions you have about the IB program. We will confirm the time and date next week. Please do read the minutes for a more detailed overview. We also invite everyone to a Senior School coffee morning on Friday 18 January, a save the date will be sent via SMS.

Have a great weekend, stay warm.

Warm regards,

Suzy Pugh

Humanities Update

In Humanities lessons this term Year 7- Year 9 have been completing a variety of fun learning activities from playdough modelling of tectonic plate boundaries, a VR experience to visit Antarctica, and a recent Arctic game where students collected oil and fish resources with straws, which was highly competitive!

In particular, Year 9 students have been completing a topic on ‘Weather and Climate’ in which they learn about the global atmospheric system and use Greta Thunberg’s book to explore environmental racism and country and gender inequalities in relation to the impacts of climate change. They have also been practicing their geographical enquiry skills, which will be essential for IGCSE and IB. Using geographical equipment, they measured temperature, humidity, wind, and light intensity in different microclimates around the school to decide the best location for the new bug hotels being installed by the sustainability team. The Year 9 students are excited to be the decision makers behind this new green project and are looking forward to seeing the bug hotels up and running in term 2!
