Senior School

This week, we were treated to a fantastic Summer Recital that highlighted the incredible talents of our students. The diversity and commitment displayed were inspiring, and it was wonderful to see such a wide range of performances. Our students never cease to amaze us with their dedication and creativity.

As the temperatures rise, we are taking steps to ensure the safety and comfort of our students. While we’ve decided to relax the dress code slightly by allowing students to forgo ties, we are still maintaining uniform standards. This balance helps everyone stay cool while preserving the sense of school pride and unity.

We are thrilled to announce the return of the Xi’an cultural experience group! This enriching trip offered students a deep dive into history and education. Highlights included visiting the awe-inspiring Terracotta Warriors, exploring the historic Xi’an City Wall, and indulging in delicious local foods. Students also engaged in traditional calligraphy, tai chi, and kung fu sessions, and connected with local schools and universities.

This experience aligned perfectly with our IB Learner Profile. Our students demonstrated their inquirer nature by exploring new historical contexts, became more knowledgeable about ancient Chinese history, showed open-mindedness in embracing a different culture, and practiced communication through interactions with local peers and university students.

Wednesday marked an exciting milestone for our Year 6 students as they embarked on their transition to Secondary School. The introduction session was excellent, leaving everyone eager and enthusiastic about the next step in their educational journey. Our students are truly ready for this new chapter!

We wrapped up the week with an amazing House Summer Water Party. George Welsby, Head of Houses and the house Leadership Team, planned an afternoon filled with fun, camaraderie, and refreshing activities. The event concluded with a delightful BBQ and a silent disco, providing a perfect mix of relaxation and excitement. It was a memorable way to celebrate the end of the week and foster a sense of community among our students.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all parents and staff who continue to support our school and its activities. Your involvement and dedication make a significant difference in the lives of our students.

Have a great week everyone, only one more week to go!

Warm regards,

Suzy Pugh

Senior School Garden ECA

We became aware of the empty space in our school garden. We decided to transform it into a beautiful place with Ms Wen’s help. We gathered ideas from all group members and sketched a detailed plan for the garden layout. We decided on a variety of plants, including flowers and vegetables, to ensure a vibrant and diverse garden. We have received huge support from Primary School Gardening ECA and Senior School Sustainability Green House. They provided us with strawberry plants, corn, and vegetables and lent us tools from us for our gardening. We also planted some beautiful flowers.

We watered the plants and removed the weeds every week during our ECA. After weeks of hard work, our garden has transformed into a beautiful and inviting space. The garden is now full of beautiful colours and life. Flowers are blooming, and vegetables are ready to harvest. During the last week of the ECA, we had a salad party.

From this ECA, we have learnt teamwork and collaboration, gardening skills, environmental awareness as well as Perseverance and Patience. Transforming our school garden has been a fulfilling and educational journey. It has not only beautified our school but also provided us with a deeper connection to nature and each other.

Celebrating the Dragon Boat Festival in Mandarin Lessons

This week, senior students in Mandarin lessons delved deeper into the rich cultural heritage of the Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu Jie). This festival, one of the four major traditional Chinese festivals, is celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th month of the lunar calendar. This year, it falls on Monday, 10 June 10, 2024.

During the lessons, students explored the festival’s legendary origins. Beyond the stories, they immersed themselves in the cultural practices associated with the festival. They practised Chinese vocabulary and phrases related to the festival, enhancing their language skills through engaging and practical applications.

Moreover, the hands-on activities brought the festival’s spirit to life. Students crafted their miniature dragon boats, decorating them with colours and designs. They also tried to make Zongzi, learning the traditional method of wrapping rice in bamboo leaves, a skill passed down through generations.

This cultural study enhanced students’ understanding of the Dragon Boat Festival and deepened their appreciation of Chinese traditions and customs. Integrating language learning with cultural activities made the lessons both educational and enjoyable.

Read More Books!

Parents often ask teachers and librarians what their child ‘should’ be reading. The simple answer is usually: whatever they enjoy! Nothing beats enjoyment, and enjoyment can’t be forced. But if your child is between books, or has lost interest, it is often difficult to know what to suggest to get them back in the reading groove. That’s why we put together a book suggestion list every year. You will find the new list here, with recommended reads for all ages from 11 to adult. Every book on the list is available either in the Senior School library, or on our e-book platform Sora, or both. None are required reading, but one of these could be your child’s next favourite book! For plenty more ideas besides, students can access the library website here.
