Senior School

Dear Parents,

It has been a dynamic and reflective week here at Dulwich College Seoul, with a variety of activities showcasing our students’ talents, kindness, and leadership.

On Saturday, we welcomed potential new families to our IB Forum Open Day. It is always a pleasure to discuss learning, share our vision, and showcase our excellent facilities. Our student ambassadors and Senior Leadership Team did a fantastic job representing the school and creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

This week, we observed Remembrance Day with thought-provoking contributions across the school. Our Head Students led a poignant assembly, encouraging us to reflect on past conflicts and the lessons learned. The assembly included a seamless rendition of Widmung by Year 11 musicians Kunho J and Georgia K. The Art Department working with students from across the Senior School contributed a striking visual representation with their poppy display in the main foyer, a meaningful tribute to this important day of remembrance.

Recognising World Kindness Day, our Tacloban Fundraising ECA led the student-driven “Pepero” initiative. Students exchanged Peperos as tokens of appreciation for friends and peers, with all proceeds donated to Volunteer for Visayans. This charity supports children in Tacloban, Philippines, by meeting their nutritional and educational needs. A wonderful effort that exemplifies our values of kindness and community.

On Wednesday, 49 of our talented student musicians packed their instruments and headed to Dulwich College Beijing for the Worldwise Festival of Music. Students are focusing on one of six disciplines and will showcase their efforts in a final concert this weekend. We look forward to hearing all about their achievements upon their return.

This week, our Year 12 Head Student applicants completed their final task: delivering a two-minute pitch to the school on an initiative or how they embody our values. It was inspiring to see such thoughtful presentations. Both students and staff cast their votes, and the new Student Leadership Team will be announced next week.

Jane, Alison and I are en-route to the FOBISIA Leadership Conference in Bangkok. The conference offers the opportunity to engage with cutting-edge educational strategies, share best practices, and network with leaders from top international schools across Asia, including the other Dulwich schools. It provides valuable insights into fostering excellence, innovation, and collaboration within our own school communities.

Get Involved!

Thank you to everyone who has confirmed their child’s RSVP for the Snowball on 30 November. This wonderful event is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the term and come together as a community. We are currently looking for parents who would like to support us as chaperones for the evening. Additionally, if you or someone you know can recommend a healthy catering company to provide party-appropriate snacks, please reach out to SS.Admin@dulwich-seoul.kr. Your support helps make events like this a success!

Parent-Teacher-Student Conferences (PTSCs)

Our first full-day PTSC saw many successes, with valuable discussions around students’ achievements and next steps. Thank you to parents for your openness and curiosity during these conversations.

Unfortunately, a system error removed appointments and the ability to connect for some parents. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused. The system is now back online, and we will be arranging a rescheduled session for affected parents.

We appreciate your patience and support as we refine this new format. A feedback form will be sent via SMS next week—please take a moment to share your thoughts so we can make improvements ahead of the next PTSC on 19 February 2025.

Year 9 Math Presentation Project

My fellow Year 9 students have been working hard mastering challenging math problems! Over the past few days, they have tackled each problem step-by-step, carefully listing out every part of their work to find solutions. The object of this project was to see how well students can solve the problems making equations and showing and presenting their work. With some guidance from teachers, they learned how to break down equations, organize their approach, and check each part to ensure accuracy. Eventually they found the correct answer and presented it to teachers and their peers. The winners (Sejun, Hojae, and Han) got small prizes! I really want to say that everyone did a very good job showing their work and presenting it to others.

Audition for Lunar New Year Assembly MCs

We are excited to announce that our Lunar New Year Assembly will be held on 24 January, 2025. Therefore, we are planning to offer an audition for choosing MCs (Masters of Ceremonies) for the assembly. All students from Year 5 to Year 12 with an interest in being an MC are welcome to participate, regardless of Chinese language fluency. Please note that the MCs do not need to be super fluent in Chinese to the audition, but they should be prepared to dedicate some of their free time or a few break times for rehearsals before the event.

Audition Times:

  • Primary: 21 November & 28 November, Thursday, 11.45am – 12.15pm.
  • Senior:   21 November & 28 November, Thursday,  1pm – 1.30pm.

Location:  Mandarin classroom 304A

Audition Details: To help the candidates prepare, we have sent the samples of a few lines in the Mandarin class Teams for students to memorize and present at the audition. We encourage the students to challenge themselves, even if they feel outside of the comfort zone. Skipping difficult parts is fine, but we are looking forward to seeing more people to involved in the events.

Please fill up the survey if your child is willing to attend the audition. The survey link will be shared with your child’s Mandarin teacher or you can fill up from this link. Please sign up with your child’s school email address.

Please feel free to reach out to your child’s Mandarin teacher or Ms Dong for any further information. melody.dong@dulwich-seoul.kr

SSAEM Peer Mentoring

The Year 12 and Year 13 students are re-introducing the new SSAEM peer mentoring program for this term!

‘SSAEM’, which roughly translates to ‘tutor’ in Korean vernacular, is designed to help younger students (Year 7 to Year 11) with academics and other things relating to the senior school. It can be a great way to gain insight into IB students’ perspectives on school and also to discuss topics that are more suitable for a mature student body.

Mentees will be joined up as either single sessions (one mentor and one mentee) or double sessions (one mentor and two mentees), depending on the mentees’ choices. Scheduling for meetings will happen individually via email between the mentors and the mentees, which can happen anytime from lunchtime to 4.30pm after school.

For students wishing to become mentees for this term, please fill out this form.

We look forward to seeing more students sign up!
