Primary School

Assemblies This Week:

Monday’s assembly with Year 1- Year 3 was led by Mr Harvey and the group discussed self-care and liking ourselves.

Friday’s Assembly for Year 4- Year 6 was led by Year 5W and it had an ancient civilisation theme.

EYFS Assembly (Nursery and Reception):  We read a story focused on being communicators and how we can use our words to help ourselves and our friends.

Year 5 Morning Mingle:

Year 5 parents and family joined us early on Thursday for pastries, coffee and chat with new friends and old. Thank you to all who came along to allow their children extra practice at hosting and the opportunity to show their learning in class afterwards.

Year 1-3 Spring Toothbrushing Challenge:

At Assembly in late Feb/early March we focused on the importance of good dental care and routines so that our mouths are plaque-free and cavity-free. The children were set the challenge of recording their toothbrushing very day for 2 months. A chart was provided and we offered an incentive of sparkly toothbrushes for those whoe were successful.

Please send your child into school on Monday 13 May with their completed chart so we can celebrate their success at Assembly.

DUCKS and Year 4 Hikers!

Our students have been out in the woods this week having a wonderfully pleasant time with friends to explore and seek out bugs, new birds and new spring flowers and buds. Our community knows our sense of wellbeing and health is helped when we spend time outdoors and active which is why our Primary classes have at least 2 hikes – one in the spring and the other in autumn – each year. This week was the turn of Year 2 and Year 4 to pop on their sneakers and head for the hills around Seoul. Nursery and Reception walked in the local area to the river at Banpo to explore the habitats of animals around the area with a lovely snack on the island.

Next week, Year 1 and Year 3 will stay closer home with Year 2 and Year 3 hiking from the JW Marriott to near Banpo station.

Battle of the Books:

In a thrilling display of knowledge and teamwork, a team from Dulwich Seoul recently ventured to Suwon to participate in a Battle of the Books competition against other international schools across Korea.

Despite the stiff competition, the Dulwich Seoul team demonstrated remarkable composure and enthusiasm throughout the contest. Over the course of five games, they managed to secure victory in two —an achievement that reflects their dedication and preparedness.

More than simply winning games, the students exemplified the school’s values of as they showed they were open minded, thinkers, communicators and they acted in a principled manner throughout the day.

Looking ahead the success of this year’s competition has sparked enthusiasm within the school community. Plans are already underway to potentially field two teams for next year’s Battle of the Books. This exciting prospect underscores the growing interest and commitment to literature and academic competition among students at Dulwich Seoul. For parents interested the first 5 books can be found in the website (in the elementary section) 2024-25 Nominees | Morning Calm Medal (wordpress.com). We don’t have these books in the library yet but any eager children can find some of them online (Mr. Burrows is currently listening to Big Tree by Brian Selznick on Audible)

Students Cell Phones and smart watches:

Students are asked not to bring cell phones and smart watches onto campus. They can distract from learning and cause friendship issues too.

Cell phones and smart watches on Primary School overnight trips are strictly prohibited (inc. FOBISIA events, EiM MADD festival, year group residentials and any other overnight stay). This is due to the child protection risk that is associated with children having unsupervised access to the internet and being able to photo/video in a hotel room or tent where other children may be dressing or sleeping etc.

When discovered the phone/device will be removed from the child’s possession by our staff and all recordings checked by PLT. Parents will be contacted to collect the phone from the Head of Primary. Disciplinary actions will be followed as per the Primary Behaviour Management Policy. The student’s participation in future overnight trips will not be guaranteed.

Many thanks to all families for their support of our students’ health and wellbeing.

Student Council Elections:

The elections for Term 3’s Student Councilors are taking place. Our grateful thanks to our Term 2 Counsellors who have continued the tradition and expectation of the SC thoughtfully taking forward improvements to our provision.

Term 3 Student Council leaders will be elected next week.

‘Teachers and Kids Outfit Swap Day’ for IDEA Philippines

Does your child want to be a teacher when they grow up? Or perhaps they are always fashionably inspired by the bold colours and funky patterns worn by Ms Wilson and Mrs Cox! Well, Friday 17 May is their day to dress up… as a teacher! And, teachers will dress up as kids for the charity IDEA Philippines. So, whether it’s a Mr Spencer-style suit and tie or a light, pastel-toned attire inspired by Mrs Curran we would love to see your best ‘teacher self’ for KRW 2,000 or more.

IDEA Philippines is a charity working to educate impoverished and neglected deaf children in the Philippines. Thousands of deaf children are able to attend IDEA supported special education classes on the islands of Bohol and Leyte. Their mission is to foster self-reliance by providing academic, vocational, physical, spiritual, and economic opportunities for deaf children, adults, and families.

Year 2 Spring Hike

On Monday morning, Year 2 embarked on an exciting journey, venturing into the Seoripol trail to explore the varied habitats of living things. The children were enthusiastic, with curious minds and sharp observational skills. Along the winding paths, we marvelled at the diverse habitats bustling with life — from chirping birds hiding in towering trees to scurrying insects across the forest floor. Together, we encountered diverse animals, plants, and habitats. Back at school, the children engaged in reflective discussions, pondering over their observations and discoveries. They shared their insights, ponderings, and newfound knowledge, enriching their understanding of the many habitats surrounding us.
