Primary School

Dear Primary Families,

Reception Graduation Ceremony: Hurrah for Herons and Swans

Reception walked tall and with pride at their glittering Graduation. The event marked the end of their learning within the UK’s Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum (EYFS) which supports children’s development from birth to age five in England and many international schools globally. Families were in attendance to hear them sing and receive their certificates. Well done to our little learners!

Year 1 – Year 6 Recitals:

Our students’ growing expertise was seen and heard this week at our Summer Recitals. We enjoyed singing, classical and contemporary tunes from children aged 6-11. Thank you to the music team and all our supportive families who came to enjoy the concert!

Year 6 Celebration of Learning – What’s a Country?

Year 6 took their families on a geographical, political, economic, and climate tour of their newly developed and total fictious countries. Each students created a new nation based on their learning through Term # on “What Makes a Country?”

Year 3 Celebration of Learning – Green Fingers!

Our parents were wowed by the students’ gardening successes and their steps forward in classroom learning too. Our youngest Juniors gave their families a guided tour of the Year 3 Terrace with all its many vegetables and fruits being lovingly tended as they grow.

House Fun Day – Wet, Wet, Wet!

Friday morning was cool affair despite the heat as we held a House splash day! Students and staff slipped and slid, playing water games in teams and individually. Thanks to our House teams for their great idea and fun morning!

Year 6 Induction – the transition continues

Year 6 have had great experiences this week as part of their induction programme in Senior School. They were invited to the Senior School End of Year Summer Party on Friday which was a lovely end to the week where they enjoyed Thursday in ‘middle school’ meeting staff and trying lessons and facilities out. The aim of the Year 6 induction programme is to help all students feel confident, capable and informed as they make this move.

Year 4 Trip to Folk Village

Year 4 had a wonderful trip to the Folk Village on Thursday. Students were able to take part in some clay pit engraving as well as a traditional Korean martial arts lesson. For lunch, they were able to experience Korean food with options of cold noodles, pancakes and bibimpap on offer. It was a great experience for all involved and a lovely way to celebrate the end of the year.

Next Friday’s Assembly – Gym at 10.15am

Families are warmly invited to the final assembly of the year. It will be a celebration of student leadership and a chance to say goodbye to leaving community members. Starts 10.15am sharp and runs till 11.30am.

Thursday’s PTCs

Parents used Thursday’s PTCs to ask for follow up information regarding their child’s recent school report. This completes our reporting to parents for the academic year which comprised two school reports and three PTCs meetings, as well as the Parent Information Evening, weekly parent workshops, the Week Ahead email from each year group, and curriculum overviews each term. As always, we are available to families between times to help them better support their child at school.

Thanking Staff: a gentle reminder to families

Families will want to say thank you to their child’s teacher and TA for this year, so we would gently remind the community that this ought to be with a personal message, email or card. Gifts of any sort for staff are not permitted. Thank you for your understanding.

Assemblies This Week:

Monday’s Assembly for Year 1 – Year 3 was led by Ms Goddard and was a reminder to students about the importance of allowing others privacy for changing and toileting. Plus, she highlighted the importance of personal care and respect for ourselves.

EYFS Assembly (Nursery and Reception): We celebrated our final DUCKS 1 assembly and talked about feelings we may have as we approach the end of the academic year.

Swimming and PE:

Swimming and PE are compulsory parts of our curriculum, and all students are expected to participate every week. If your child cannot be due to a medical issue, please email the doctor’s note to the class teacher and PE dept. Students who forget their kit will have their parents called to drop it off at school in time for the lesson. Thank you for your support of our students’ health and wellbeing.

Move Up Morning on Thursday

From 10.30-11.30am on Thursday our students ‘moved up’ to their next class and met their new teacher, TA and classmates. Staff planed a calm, fun and reassuring session which gave children a taste of the expectations of their new class.

Students who are leaving DCSL for new countries had a “RAFT” session with Maggie Goddard and our counselling team. For more information on RAFT click here.

PS Parent Workshop for Term 3: “Summer Dip” – fact or fiction?

Our final Workshop of the year on Tuesday was led by Mrs Smith and focused on supporting our children’s health, wellbeing and learning during the summer vacation. How should the children spend their time, how much reading should they do, what activities are worthy of their time and what’s a waste of time?  Find the slides here.

Royal Shakespeare Company at DCSL : Power of Imagination, Story and Imagery

Through working with the poetry and stories of Shakespeare our students of Year 1 to Year 3 explored and developed their sense of language and universal themes. The practitioner and theatre director from the UK explained the importance of the plays of Shakespeare and how it can help children and young people to enrich their language and curiosity. As drama demands that we work and collaborate the students also develop their social skills and empathy. Mark Kelly (Primary Literacy Lead), Matthew Readman (Head of Senior School Drama) and Peter Bradley (RSC) explain the importance of Drama in the school curriculum.
