From our Head of College

Dear Parents and Guardians,

This week, we had the privilege of hosting d’Arcy Lunn, our Group Head of Sustainability and Global Citizenship, who has been engaging our students in illuminating workshops on Global Citizenship. With a rich background spanning over 90 countries and dedicated to making positive impacts on people and the planet, d’Arcy facilitated discussions that encouraged our students to deeply reflect on what it means to be an engaged global citizen. These sessions have been invaluable in equipping our students to think critically about their roles within the community, thereby enriching their educational journey here at Dulwich.

On Tuesday, it was inspiring to observe our Year 10 students fully engaged in the Work Experience programme throughout various departments in the school. With their keenness to contribute and learn, they took on a multitude of roles, lending their talents to areas such as Reception, PE, Translation, Science Tech, Marketing, and even the Nurse’s Office. They also proved invaluable in Procurement, Bus Coordination, and both Primary and Senior School Administration. Their enthusiasm not only underscored the value of practical, hands-on experience but also showcased the adaptable and versatile skills our students are developing. I’m pleased to let you know that the beautiful Chuseok greeting graphic was designed by our very own Year 10 student, Lindsay, as part of her Work Experience task.

Yesterday, our community came together in a vibrant display of unity and purpose to recognise International World Peace Day. Students across the College engaged in activities and discussions centred around this year’s theme, Actions for Peace. Assemblies throughout the week also delved into this vital subject matter. Many of you may have noticed the sea of purple that swept across the campus; this colour symbolises transformation, power, and strength, and served as a visual representation of our collective commitment to peace and understanding.

I’m delighted to report that our Year 7, Year 8, and Year 11 students have safely returned this afternoon, each with their own set of unique and adventurous tales to share. Activities ranged from camping under the stars and white-water rafting to scenic hiking. Some year groups even contributed to the local community by teaching at an elementary school, crafting scarecrows for farmers, and participating in plogging. Despite a rainy detour cancelling a cycling segment, it led to an engaging visit to a Korean history museum. Team-building games, beach activities, and even a spot of barehanded fishing filled the days. Additionally, an outing to the Bank of Korea led to the creation of Dulwich’s very own “kindest currency in the universe,” affectionately named ‘gudmonys’.

Our Year 9 and Year 10 students engaged in some ingenious engineering this week, facing off in a friendly House competition to construct the most impressive Rube Goldberg machine. With each team pulling out all the stops, the designs came replete with catchy and pun-laden names like ‘Pie-way to Hell’ and ‘Rubenheimer’. The results were astonishing and hilarious, showcasing the ingenuity and teamwork that define our student body. Due to the large-scale military parade scheduled for next Tuesday, 26 September, traffic disruptions are expected throughout central Seoul. In light of this, we have decided to cancel all ECAs for that day. For more information on road closures and how this may affect your commute, please visit the Whole School section on our website. The parade, organised to mark the 75th founding anniversary of South Korea’s armed forces, will feature extensive road closures from early afternoon into the evening. Your understanding and cooperation in this matter are highly appreciated.

I would like to invite all parents to attend our special Chuseok assembly next Wednesday afternoon at 2pm in the gymnasium. This festive gathering promises a rich variety of performances to celebrate the Korean harvest moon festival. We are particularly excited to be partnering with our neighboring school, Gyeseong Elementary School, to celebrate this important holiday. Students from Gyeseong will perform the traditional Shinbaram Poongmulbu and I am very much looking forward to seeing their dynamic performance. In addition to this guest performance, we’ll have singing from our Year 1, Year 3, and Year 5 students, a Year 10 drama act, and our four of our Year 12 students will serve as MCs. As a finishing touch, we will unveil this year’s much-anticipated staff music (parody) video, which is bound to be a hit. We look forward to seeing you there!

I hope you enjoy the gorgeous autumn weather.

With my best wishes,

Mr Guðmundur Hegner Jónsson
