From our Head of College

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I write to you today from Bangkok, Thailand, where I am attending the FOBISIA Leadership Conference 2023 together with Jane Smith and Suzy Pugh, Heads of Primary School and Senior School, respectively.

FOBISIA (Federation of British International Schools in Asia) for those who may not be familiar with it, is a membership organisation that brings together British International Schools across Asia to collaborate, share best practices, and provide professional development opportunities for educators. By participating in FOBISIA, our school benefits from a vast network of educational resources, events, and conferences, which enables us to continually improve and provide an exceptional educational experience for our students.

In a delightful and scrumptious twist to my usual responsibilities, I had the pleasure of participating in our Senior School Pi Day celebrations as one of the judges for the highly anticipated pie-tasting competition. In a delicious intersection of mathematics and the culinary arts, one volunteer student representing each house took it upon themselves to bake their best “pi pie”, and they delivered a truly mouth watering array of pies for us to try. It was a tough decision, and I must admit, a few extra bites were necessary in the name of fairness and thoroughness. Thank you to all our young bakers for making this event a memorable and tasty success, and congratulations to Eileen K in Year 9 for her winning entry, featured above.

Discover the captivating stories in our Spring edition of Dulwich Haru! Get to know Seoyoon, a talented ballet dancer in Year 8, Nina Burrows, our Head of DUCKS1, and Aayesha Temur Khan, a Friends of Dulwich executive committee member who runs a school for underserved children in Pakistan. Thank you for sharing your stories with us Seoyoon, Nina, and Aayesha.

On Monday, you will have received an email and SMS message about our annual Dulwich Experience Parent Survey. Your honest and thoughtful feedback is vital for our ongoing development and enhancement of educational programs and services. If you have not done so yet, I encourage you to take a few moments to share your insights. Your answers are strictly anonymous and your participation ensures that we can continue to deliver the highest quality educational experience for our students. Thank you for your support and commitment to our school’s growth and success.

Those who passed by the College Foyer today surely observed the bustling preparations underway for the upcoming IB Visual Art Exhibition. I cordially invite our entire Dulwich community to attend the official opening, complete with music and refreshments, on Thursday, 23rd March, at 4 pm. This exhibition highlights the extraordinary works by two of our outstanding student artists, Dabinn and Isabelle. Should you be unable to attend the opening, I encourage you to visit the exhibition at your convenience to appreciate the creative talents of our students.

I would like to bring to your attention that expansion work on the road connecting Acro River Park to GyeSung Elementary School (perpendicular to our street, to the east) began on Wednesday and will continue until 20 June. I apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and kindly request that you consider reducing your driving during this period to avoid potential delays. Your understanding and cooperation in this matter are greatly appreciated.

The mask mandate for public transport will be lifted on Monday 20 March. In accordance with this change, the school will no longer require the use of masks on school buses/coaches. Please note that health authorities still recommend the wearing of masks on public transport when it’s crowded, for high-risk groups and for those with symptoms. Of course, some members of our community may continue to wear masks, despite the absence of a mandate. Individual circumstances vary, and the choice to wear a mask is a personal decision that deserves respect. The important thing is ensuring that everyone feels secure and at ease within the school environment.

Lastly, as we embrace the spirit of global community here at Dulwich, I would like to take a moment to acknowledge and celebrate St. Patrick’s Day today. I extend my warmest wishes to the Irish members of our community and to everyone who values the rich culture and heritage of Ireland.

With my best wishes,

Mr Guðmundur Hegner Jónsson

Head of College
