Dear Parents and Guardians,
The spirit of friendly competition was alive and well at the College today as our Year 3 and Year 4 students enthusiastically took part in the House Games. The gym was filled with excitement and House pride, with parents eagerly looking on to cheer their children. The students competed in a round-robin style event of catch volleyball, showcasing their athleticism and teamwork. After a series of engrossing matches, it was Alleyn House who prevailed as champions on this occasion. Congratulations to them on their hard-fought victory!
It was wonderful to witness our Year 5 and 6 students truly embrace global citizenship this week during their combined Model United Nations (MUN) activity. The students adeptly assumed the roles of delegates representing various countries and advocated passionately for their assigned nations’ stances on important world issues. I was immensely impressed by their poise, research skills, and ability to articulate perspectives that may have differed from their own personal views. Experiences like these are invaluable for developing critical thinking, public speaking abilities, and cross-cultural understanding. Watching our young diplomats in action filled me with pride at the way they upheld the Dulwich values of open-mindedness and intellectual engagement. Well-done to all participants on a successful MUN conference!
Tuesday’s ‘Insiders’ Guide to University Admissions’ workshop proved incredibly valuable for our parent community. Our university counselling experts, including Paul Sweet and counsellors from Dulwich College Beijing and Shanghai Pudong, provided illuminating insights to demystify the admissions process. They addressed common myths, facilitated a revealing mock admissions committee exercise, and answered questions. Playing the role of admissions officers allowed parents to gain an invaluable first-hand perspective into evaluating applicants. It was wonderful to see such engaged families proactively equipping themselves with knowledge to better support their children’s university aspirations and trajectories. My thanks goes to our counselling team for delivering this informative session and final stop on this UCC Roadshow throughout our Family of Schools.
Mark your calendars for next Wednesday, 20 March from 5pm to 7.30pm in the Auditorium for a powerful event. We will screen the award-winning and critically acclaimed documentary Beyond Utopia, providing a rare glimpse into the human rights crisis in North Korea through the resilience of ordinary people pursuing freedom. After the film, join a fireside chat with one of the film’s executive producers and consultants Hannah Song from Liberty in North Korea (LiNK), a nonprofit that helps North Koreans escape North Korea and resettle in their new countries. This is a unique opportunity to learn about advocacy and the realities within one of the world’s most repressive regimes. We are opening the event up to non-Dulwich friends to raise awareness about the issue and provide a glimpse of how we encourage rich discussions around important issues impacting the world today. We expect seating to be limited and encourage you to secure your seats by RSVPing here soon.
The deadline for the Dulwich Experience Parent Survey has been extended until Monday, 25 March. I encourage all parents who have not yet participated to make their voices heard. This anonymous survey, available in English and Korean, takes just 10 minutes to complete and provides invaluable feedback to guide our trajectory. If you have not already done so, please follow this link: 2024 Dulwich Experience Parent Survey link to share your perspectives. Your insights allow us to continuously enhance the educational experience at Dulwich College Seoul.
I extend my sincere gratitude to the Friends of Dulwich (FoD) for organizing yesterday’s wonderful Social Coffee Morning with combined Used Uniform and Book Sale. It was fantastic to see such an enthusiastic turnout from our parent community attending this event. The ability to sustainably source gently-used uniforms and books at discounted prices while socializing over coffee is such a valuable service provided by the FoD. Thank you to everyone who came out to support this worthwhile initiative perfectly aligned with our values.
Excitement is building as a team of our students prepares to depart for the much-anticipated Dulwich Olympiad in Singapore this Sunday. From 18 to 22 March, they will join around 600 peers from Dulwich schools worldwide for this celebration combining sports, drama, music, and art competitions. It promises to be an enriching cultural exchange fostering new friendships through the shared love of healthy rivalry. Take a look at this teaser video for a glimpse into the Olympiad experience. I know our talented delegates will make us proud ambassadors while creating lifelong memories in Singapore. Safe travels and best of luck to our DCSL team!
With my best wishes,
Mr Guðmundur Hegner Jónsson
