Dear Parents and Guardians,
I’d like to thank all the parents and guardians who joined us for the Parent Information Evening on Tuesday. The feedback we’ve received about the format and the information presented has been overwhelmingly positive. Seeing so many engaged and enthusiastic faces in the audience reinforced the sense of community that makes Dulwich College Seoul such a special place.
Today’s New Parent Coffee Morning was a great success. The event offered a splendid chance for the new members of our community to get to know the College Leadership Team, all while enjoying some tasty snacks and freshly made coffee. A special note of gratitude goes to the Friends of Dulwich (FoD) for showing up to welcome our new families and for having the great idea to pair a used uniform sale with this event for the first time. The sale was met with enthusiasm, especially as it caters so directly to the needs of our new parents. And hats off to the brave parents who seized the opportunity to take on the ‘Dulwich Drop’!
It was a tremendous privilege to welcome the acclaimed author An Na to our campus yesterday. She captivated our Senior School students with insightful discussions on an array of topics, ranging from the challenges of her Korean American upbringing to the stages of her literary journey. Tailored to a teenage audience, An Na’s award-winning books will resonate deeply with our students, who were delighted to have their copies personally signed by the author.
We had the pleasure of welcoming back Gabby Green, an alumna from our class of 2019, to campus today. Gabby engaged our students in thoughtful dialogue about intercultural communication and understanding, core principles of her organisation, New Global Normal (NGN). Founded amidst the challenges of the Coronavirus pandemic, this youth-led initiative seeks to bridge cultural divides and promote global harmony. Her visit underscores values we hold dear at Dulwich, affirming that active engagement across cultures is an investment in a more harmonious global community.
On Monday, I had the honour of attending a fireside chat with the Ukrainian Ambassador to Korea, Dmytro Ponomarenko, at the Seoul Club. His account of the ongoing conflict was both deeply inspiring and profoundly saddening. The hardships faced by the Ukrainian people at the hands of the Russian army are almost beyond comprehension. Such discussions underscore the importance of global awareness, a value we strive to encourage in our Dulwich community.
I would like to announce that our Saturday Sports Coordinator, Martin Bushell, has been appointed as the new KAIAC (Korean-American Interscholastic Activities Conference) Coordinator. While we are actively participating in KAIAC’s varsity sports throughout the year, it’s worth noting that we won’t be fielding volleyball teams this term. Rest assured, we will arrange alternative opportunities, both domestically and internationally, for our volleyball enthusiasts. Martin addressed our Senior School students in today’s assembly, providing details on how they can get involved, starting with try-outs for both boys and girls next week after school.
I am very much looking forward to next Friday’s Welcome Back Picnic after school. I can happily confirm that the much-talked-about ‘Dulwich Drop’ will be open for both students and parents to experience. Please do join us for a lovely afternoon on the College Field. For further details, please see the Whole School section of this update.
With my best wishes,
Mr Guðmundur Hegner Jónsson
