From our Head of College

Dear Parents and Guardians,

This week marked a landmark occasion with the official opening of the Dulwich Drop, a momentous event that I had the privilege of leading alongside Mrs Smith and our student leaders. Joined by our enthusiastic Student Council members and Head Students, we inaugurated this unique slide amidst silver tinsel and resounding cheers. Undoubtedly, the day’s highlight was everyone sliding down to the awaiting spectacular slide-shaped cake, all set to the lively rhythm of the Cha Cha Slide

This week, we had the pleasure of welcoming back Roy McGrath and his jazz quartet to our school as part of our Diversity Arts Series. A renowned tenor saxophonist and composer from Chicago, Roy McGrath, along with his band, engaged our Senior School students in master classes, delving into the intricacies of jazz composition, performance techniques, and improvisation. They also conducted jazz appreciation sessions, enriching our students’ understanding and love for this unique art form. The highlight of their visit was the performances in our auditorium at the end of each day, attended in turn by both Senior and Primary School students, showcasing the electrifying talent of the quartet, an educational treat for all.

In another Diversity Arts Series event, the talented poet and rapper Mark Grist will visit us next week. Mark will engage our Senior School students in a series of interactive workshops. These sessions will delve into the art of poetic and lyrical expression, offering students a unique opportunity to explore and develop their creative talents under his guidance. His visit promises to be an inspiring experience, encouraging our students to discover new ways of expressing themselves through the powerful mediums of poetry and rap.

Our upcoming Wine & Cheese with Senior School evening on Thursday, 1 February 2024, is generating quite a buzz among our families, especially with its recent extension to include Year 5 parents due to popular demand. This special event, taking place in our IB Centre, is an excellent opportunity for both Year 5 and Year 6 parents to delve into the enriching experiences Senior School offers. Through discussions, first-hand accounts from our IB students and Senior School parents, and an optional tour of our facilities, it’s a chance to discover how we support our students in their journey to becoming global citizens. We will also give away some prized Dulwich merchandise to celebrate school spirit. I warmly invite Year 5 and Year 6 parents to join us for an evening of insight and connection. For further details, please refer to the Primary School section of this update.

As we navigate through this season, I’d like to remind everyone to be vigilant regarding health and wellness within our school community. Recently, there have been a few illnesses circulating, and it’s important that we all stay informed and cautious. Please pay close attention to the email updates from our school nurse and adhere to the health guidelines provided. By working together and being mindful of our health practices, we can ensure a safe and healthy environment for all our students and staff. Let’s collaborate to keep our community healthy and thriving during this time.

With my best wishes,

Mr Guðmundur Hegner Jónsson
