From our Head of College

Dear Parents and Guardians,

There have been all kinds of activities taking place in school this week. On Wednesday, Year 10 students had an opportunity to see the school from a whole new perspective when they joined our administrative staff for a day of work experience.

Students were assigned in groups to our various administrative departments – Finance, Human Resources, Admissions, Marketing, Reception, IT, Facilities and Operations – and they learned all about the specific functions of those departments.

Later, they moved through the entire school as they were put to work and sent out on various jobs and tasks. I would like to congratulate the Year 10 students on their enthusiasm and strong work ethic, and I would like to thank the Administration Staff for so graciously welcoming the students into their places of work.

Last night, I had the pleasure of attending the British Chamber of Commerce in Korea (BCCK) Garden Party at the British Ambassador’s Residence, which Dulwich College Seoul was proudly sponsoring. Joining me there were other members of the College Leadership Team, a few of our teaching staff, and our Friends of Dulwich Co-Chairs Vicky and Helena, to whom I was grateful for representing our parents’ voices. I bumped into several other school parents during the evening and it was great to catch up with them while also having the chance to meet a great many other people in the broader community.

Dulwich Talk guest speaker Jacco Zwetsloot, North Korea expert and host of the NK News Podcast, delivered a fascinating presentation to parents and Senior School students on the decades-long “Propaganda War” between North and South Korea. Did you know that just during the Korean War itself, UN forces dropped over two billion leaflets? That’s enough to cover every inch of the Korean peninsula with paper! As usual, the students tested the limits of Jacco’s deep knowledge with some very thoughtful and challenging questions during the Q&A session.

Our volleyball teams travelled to Korea Kent Foreign School this week, resplendent in their brand new Dulwich Leopards uniforms, which were just unveiled this week. The repair work in our own gymnasium is nearly complete and we look forward to hosting our first matches at our home turf and launch our newly refreshed gym very soon.

Also this week, we had Year 3 Muffins with Mums, the kick-off of the Primary School Readathon, several cohorts of Senior School students embarking on their Adventurous Journeys, and the culmination of the Senior School “Dragon’s Den” competition, where teams of students pitched their groundbreaking ideas for improving the College to an audience of their teachers and peers.

Next week we have our University and College Counselling Parent Kick-Off Meeting for Year 7 to Year 9, Year 2 Muffins with Mums, and FoD member Kavittha will be hosting other parents for a cooking class to make delicious Palak Chicken and Peas Pulav on 7 October. Don’t miss bargain hunting for some great book finds at the FoD’s monthly coffee morning on 13 October where more used books will be sold and you could bring your used books for donation. Please see the various sections of this E-update for more details around upcoming events.

I hope you have a restful long weekend.

With my best wishes,

Mr Gudmundur Hegner Jonsson
Head of College
