Dear Parents and Guardians,
As we approach the end of Term 1, I’ve been reflecting on the remarkable resilience and kindness within our school community. These qualities have shone brightly, especially given the global challenges we face, symbolized recently by COP 28. It’s a reminder of the importance of meaningful conversations and collective responsibility in managing our world more effectively. At Dulwich, our commitment to inspiring students to be global citizens who make a positive difference is evident every day. Yet, there’s always room for growth, approached with humility, care, and respect for one another. As this term concludes, I encourage each of us to reflect, rest, and look after ourselves and our loved ones, cherishing the time spent with family and friends over the winter season.
Speaking of making a positive difference, I’d like to say a big thank you for the overwhelming generosity shown in our Christmas gift drive. The immense efforts of our Global Warriors, Charity Committee, and dedicated teacher leaders resulted in the delivery of 218 personalised gifts to children in four welfare homes. The sight of so many gifts is a powerful demonstration of what we can achieve together. As we move towards the new year, let us continue to embrace this spirit, proud of the tangible impact we’ve made this holiday season.
Today, our school was alive with the spirit of Christmas, starting with the Primary School special Christmas assembly in the gym. It was a joyous occasion, attended by a full house of students and many parents. The event was filled with memorable moments, including the famous “Friday Funny” interludes from Mr Harvey, the adorable singing of our Nursery and Reception students, the harmonious Super Singers, and a student band’s soulful rendition of Last Christmas. The highlight for many was the ever-popular House Christmas Carol competition, which saw Shackleton emerge as the proud overall winners after spirited performances from all.
In the afternoon, the Senior School House Pantomime brightened the gym with original renditions of classics. Our students delivered comedic performances of Snow White, The Little Mermaid, Cinderella, and Little Red Riding Hood. They sported creative costume and prop designs, including a life-sized mannequin, which captivated our Year 4 and Year 6 audiences especially. The whole gym was filled with loud cheers and laughter echoing throughout the performances. The decision was a tough one for the judges, but Shackleton again stole the day with their interpretation of Snow White. Thank you to Head of Houses George Welsby for coordinating.
Our latest edition of Dulwich Haru profiles a student, staff member, and parent, each offering a rich personal history and fascinating insights. Discover Year 5 student Aranya’s journey from nervous newcomer to a confident member of our community, IB Coordinator Emma Chamberlain’s insights into navigating the IB programme, and parent Emil Daina’s extensive involvement in various school volunteer roles, exemplifying the spirit of active participation. Their stories highlight the rich experiences and dedicated spirit within our school. A special thank you to all who shared their stories in this edition of Haru.
As we prepare to take a well-deserved break, whether staying in Korea or travelling abroad, I wish everyone in our community a restful and joyous holiday season. For those of you remaining in Korea, do stay warm as the weather turns sharply colder next week. This holiday is a time to relax, rejuvenate, and spend quality time with family and friends. I look forward to welcoming you all back after the break, ready to embark on the exciting journey Term 2 will bring us. Until then, take care, stay safe, and enjoy the festive season to the fullest.
With my best wishes,
Mr Guðmundur Hegner Jónsson
