From our Head of College

Dear Parents and Guardians,

This week, we had the honour of welcoming Dr Cameron Pyke, Deputy Master (External) of Dulwich College London, to our campus. His visits are always significant for us and help us to reinforce our dedication to educational quality through his enriching insights. Dr Pyke’s engagement with our students, teachers, and parents was a highlight, embodying the collaborative ethos of our school. His willingness to take the ‘Dulwich Drop’ was also an entertaining demonstration of his commitment to engaging with our community’s spirit. I am excited to share that Dr Pyke has accepted our invitation to return as a special guest for Founder’s Day 2024.

Today’s Senior and Primary School assemblies were graced by special guest Emma Campbell, Executive Director of Doctors Without Borders’s Korea office, who shared the impactful work and global outreach of the organisation, providing a unique perspective on global health and humanitarian efforts. The talks offered our students a deeper understanding of the challenges faced in different parts of the world and the importance of medical and humanitarian aid. Such experiences are invaluable in cultivating awareness and empathy, key components of our ethos in developing well-rounded, global citizens.

November at Dulwich College Seoul is abuzz with our ‘No Carbon November‘ initiative, highlighting our commitment to sustainability and environmental awareness where we encourage students to take action every day no matter how small, such as using reusable cups and biking to school. Just today, James Tosdevin, our Head of Sustainability in the Senior School, led a workshop for parents about sustainable practices within our school. Additionally, our Senior School students enthusiastically participated in a clothes swap at lunch, a wonderful example of reusing and recycling in action. These events are just a glimpse of the numerous activities planned throughout the month, each designed to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation for our environment among our students, staff, and the wider school community.

Next week, we are excited to host our Winter Recitals, a showcase of the remarkable musical talents of our students. Scheduled for the evenings of Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of next week, these recitals will feature performances from students in Years 1 to Year 13. Each participant, whether a young beginner or an experienced musician, will have the opportunity to shine and share their musical journey with us. This is a particularly valuable experience for our GCSE and IB music students, providing a platform for them to record their coursework. We extend our heartfelt encouragement to all our performers for their dedication and hard work in preparation for this event. A special thank you to Mr Knights for his meticulous organisation and support in making these recitals a reality.

We are filled with anticipation to meet our three finalists for the Head of College position, as well as friends from EiM, on Monday and Tuesday. These two days will be integral to our school’s future, as the candidates engage in comprehensive interviews with representatives spanning our entire Dulwich College Seoul community including staff, students and parents. I extend my gratitude to the parents who have registered to attend the candidates’ presentations on Monday afternoon in the Auditorium. Your participation is invaluable in this crucial phase of our school’s journey, and we look forward to sharing this experience with you.

As the winter chill sets in, the warmth of our community spirit comes alive at the Winter Bazaar on Saturday, 2 December. This festive event, proudly orchestrated by the Friends of Dulwich, will be a treasure trove of experiences with stalls overflowing with delectable foods, distinctive handmade crafts, and a variety of second-hand goods to delight treasure seekers. The stage will resonate with the beautiful sounds of the Junior Choir and Super Singers, alongside the rhythmic beats of the Senior School Big Band. It’s a day of celebration, brimming with activities that are sure to render it an unforgettable experience for everyone involved. Please note that while we are keen to share this joyous occasion, the Winter Bazaar is a celebration for our immediate Dulwich community and parents must have their lanyards to enter.

Heading into the weekend, it appears we are in for some chilly weather. I hope you all stay warm and cosy with your loved ones. Looking forward to seeing many of you at our upcoming events.

With my best wishes,

Mr Guðmundur Hegner Jónsson
