From our Head of College

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As educators, we have the responsibility to provide a safe and secure learning environment for our children. One of the most important tasks we undertake is safeguarding the children in our care. That’s why we are continuously working to improve our policies, procedures, and training to ensure that your children are protected at all costs.

Because we firmly believe in accountability and transparency, we undergo regular safeguarding audits. Tim Gerrish, a world-renowned global expert from International Child Protection Advisors, visited our school to perform the audit. With his expertise and experience as a retired Scotland Yard detective, Tim provided valuable insights through interviews with students and staff and a thorough analysis of our policies and procedures. With his help, we are striving to further strengthen our training, awareness, and policy around this critical issue.

We are grateful for Tim’s dedication and hard work, and we remain committed to providing the highest standard of care for our students.

The Dulwich Model United Nations took place last weekend, bringing together delegates from various schools across the city to engage in thought-provoking discussions centred around the theme of “War”. Months of preparation by Secretary Generals Eunji S and Andrea K finally paid off as participants, representing various countries, worked together to find peaceful solutions to the challenges posed by war.

I recently had the opportunity to sit for an interview with Business Korea. We talked about my upbringing as a globe-trotting Icelandic third culture kid, my first career as an archaeologist, my time in the music industry, and my experiences since arriving in Korea. By sharing my personal experiences, I hope I can provide valuable insights and inspiration for others interested in adapting to change and embracing uncertainty in the pursuit of a fulfilling career. The Gala Ball organised by the Friends of Dulwich is fast approaching. If you have not picked up your tickets yet, you can still purchase them tomorrow, Saturday 11 February during Saturday Sports from 10am to 12pm (KRW200,000, cash only). Brought to you by our committed parent volunteer group, FoD, this black tie event is sure to be a fun-filled celebration of our community with great food, entertainment, raffle prizes and silent auction items. The ticket includes a full-course dinner and wine. I am looking forward to spending a wonderful evening dedicated to celebrating our school community with you all.

It was a pleasure seeing FoD members and new faces at the FoD Social Coffee Morning Thursday. The monthly coffee mornings are now conveniently held together with either a used uniform sale or used book sale, switching every other month. Some parents picked up a few used uniform items while sipping coffee – multitasking at its best!

Next week, Dr. Cameron Pyke, Deputy Master (External) of Dulwich College, will be visiting our school as part of his annual inspection. Dr. Pyke’s visit is a testament to the strong academic standards and holistic curriculum that we adhere to, as well as our commitment to our founding school, Dulwich College. With extensive experience as the Head of Upper School in London and his current role overseeing the College’s educational partnerships, Dr. Pyke brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to our school, and we are looking forward to showcasing all we have achieved since his last visit and to receiving his valuable feedback.

Please come to our next Dulwich Talk featuring special guest Joo-Seuk Maing, CEO of PRETTL SWH Korea and Vietnam. Born and raised in Stuttgart, Germany, Joo-Seuk will share his experience growing up as a second generation Korean-German, his 17+ years of experience in the global auto industry and how he is working to infuse change into one of the world’s most conservative industries. The talk will be at 2.30pm on Wednesday 15 February in the College Auditorium.

Dulwich College Seoul will host a free concert of Korean choral music performed by the National Chorus of Korea on Wednesday 15 February at 5.30pm. The concert will feature compositions by well-known Korean composers and will include a lecture by Dr. Ryan Goessl about the music and Korean choral music scene. The National Chorus of Korea, established in 1973 and re-established as a foundation in 2000, is an independent art organisation under the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism and is dedicated to the development and popularisation of Korean choral music. The chorus is currently led by its 10th and 11th Artistic Director, Dr. Euijoong Yoon. Seating is limited, so attendees are asked to RSVP by filling in this form.

With my best wishes,

Mr Guðmundur Hegner Jónsson

Head of College
