From our Head of College

Dear Parents and Guardians,

At long last, the mask mandate was lifted this week (with some exceptions), and our students’ uncovered smiles lit up the school in ways I haven’t seen since I arrived here in 2020. How wonderful it was to see whole faces displaying full ranges of expression and emotion once again!

Certainly, it is important to recognise that many in our community may still choose to wear masks even if there is no longer a requirement to do so. Everyone’s situation is different. The decision to wear a mask is a personal one, and that choice should be respected. The most important thing is that everyone feels safe and comfortable while in school.

Please join me at the Dulwich College Seoul Gala Ball on Tuesday 28 February at the beautiful Conrad Seoul in Yeouido. The Friends of Dulwich (FoD) have worked hard to bring you this black tie event, and I thank them for their efforts. Rumour has it that there may or may not be a certain Icelandic former opera singer who will be performing a few songs. Please see the Whole School section of this e-update for more details on where and when to purchase tickets for this special celebration of our community. Please be advised that tickets are cash only and seats are limited.

One place you can easily get tickets to the Gala Ball is at the Social Coffee Morning and Used Uniform Sale for all parents next Thursday 9 February from 8.30am to 10am. Enjoy a free barista-made cup of coffee, find those uniform items you need, and pick up tickets for the Gala Ball all while connecting with other parents in our community.

Black History Month has officially begun and we have organised a series of events to celebrate and educate our students about the rich history and contributions of Black figures. Assemblies were held this week in both Primary and Senior School, where students learned about the significance of this month. Daily activities will be held throughout the school to deepen our students’ understanding and appreciation of Black history, including honouring Black figures in history such as NASA scientist Katherine Johnson and Freedom Fighter Harriet Tubman. Let’s together recognize and honour the impact Black people have made to fight for freedom and justice for all.

We are excited to unveil the latest issue of our retrospective magazine The College Seoul. It provides a fascinating look back at the previous academic year and it’s an especially poignant reminder of our shared experience as we transition now to mask-free living. You can read it online or download it right now by clicking this link. We will also distribute a printed hardcopy version for every family in our community soon.

Please join us for our next Dulwich Talk featuring special guest Joo-Seuk Maing, CEO of PRETTL Group SWH Korea/Vietnam, a leading provider of electric device solutions for automotive industries. Born and raised in Stuttgart, Germany, Joo-seuk Maing will share his experience growing up as a second generation Korean-German, his 17+ years of experience in the global auto industry and how he is working to infuse change into one of the world’s most conservative industries. The talk will take place at 2.30pm on Wednesday 15 February.

With my best wishes,

Mr Guðmundur Hegner Jónsson
