International Francophonie Day

Dulwich College Seoul celebrated International Francophonie Day with a week-long schedule of events and activities aiming to bring an immersive experience of the French-speaking world to our school community.

The week kicked off with an adapted school lunch menu. Throughout the whole week, students got to taste an array of different dishes from the French Speaking world, from Coq au vin originating in France, to Griot from Haiti. Thank you to Quadra, our catering partner, for their flexibility and culinary skills.

Outside of the canteen, students engaged in an interactive ´Street-Wise´ quiz. By scanning a QR code, they were transported to a street in a French speaking country. Students had to answer questions based on what they saw on the street, with extra points being given to those who answered in French. Congratulations to Ayin C for winning the ´Street-Wise´ competition, and a massive well done to Hana S and Hope P for writing their answers in both French and English.

On Thursday, students took part in the much-anticipated Francophonie Fashion Thursday, dressing up as something that they associated with the French speaking world. From Timothée Chalamet to Président Macron, the students engaged in the day with enthusiasm and creativity. Congratulations to Oonagh M for her portrayal of Coco Chanel and winning the ´best dressed´ competition.

The week ended at our pop-up crêperie on Friday lunchtime. Students got the chance to purchase homemade crêpes and top them with an ingredient found in a French speaking world. This event raised KRW 210,000 which will be donated to the College´s community partners.

It was a fantastic week showcasing and celebrating the French-speaking world, a week that we are sure enriched our students´ cultural fluency and understanding.

Silver Medal for Jaewook K at Korea Science and Engineering Fair

We are proud to announce that Jaewook K (Year 12) has been awarded a Silver Medal at the 22nd Korea Science and Engineering Fair (KSEF). His research project, titled “Pessimism in South Korea: Social Network Analysis to Investigate the Impact of Belief Spread on Declining Fertility Rates,” impressed the judges with its innovative approach to one of South Korea’s pressing demographic challenges.

“The research process was enjoyable because I developed my computational and statistical skills to provide a unique insight behind South Korea’s declining fertility rate trend,” Jaewook reflects on his seven-month research journey that began in July 2024.

This impressive achievement has earned Jaewook a place as a finalist in the prestigious GENIUS Olympiad to be held in June in the United States, where he will represent both Dulwich College Seoul and South Korea on the global stage.

Congratulations to Jaewook K on this outstanding achievement!

Jane L Named Co-Captain of Korean National Public Speaking Team

Jane L (Year 12) has been appointed co-captain of the Korean National Public Speaking Team, adding to her impressive list of public speaking accomplishments. Jane will be representing Korea at the prestigious World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships (WIDPSC) 2025 in Malaysia.

Jane’s journey in public speaking began when she joined the debate ECA at school. Inspired by watching an older student deliver an impromptu speech, she was captivated by the art of eloquent, spontaneous communication. This led her to join a debate academy where she developed her skills in both debate and public speaking.

Outstanding Achievement Record

Jane’s talent and dedication have earned her numerous accolades:

  • Australasian Public Speaking Championships (2025)
  • Overall Champion (top 4%)
  • 1st Place – Persuasive Speaking
  • 2nd Place – Interpretive Reading
  • National Speech & Debate Association: International District Tournament (2025)
  • 2nd Place in Original Oratory
  • Qualified for the US National Speech and Debate Tournament
  • Korea Public Speaking Championships (2024)
  • Overall National Champion
  • 1st Place – Original Oratory
  • Top 6 Speaker (WIDPSC Team Korea qualifier)

A Platform for Change

For Jane, public speaking an opportunity to make a difference. “I’m very grateful that I can use my talent in public speaking to deliver speeches on global issues in our society today, telling both my own and others’ stories,” she explains.

Her passion for advocacy is evident in her award-winning speech at the NSDA International District Qualifier, where she addressed the visibility of rare diseases in healthcare systems. Inspired by a friend who suffers from a rare disease, Jane used her platform to raise awareness and inspire change.

Looking Ahead

Jane is now preparing to represent Dulwich College Seoul and Korea at two major upcoming events:

  • The World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships 2025 (WIDPSC) in Malaysia
  • The US National Speech & Debate Tournament 2025 (NSDA)

The US National Speech & Debate Tournament is particularly significant as Jane is one of only two students in the original oratory division to qualify internationally. Since 1931, this prestigious event has brought together more than 6,000 students annually in what is considered the largest academic competition in the world.

We wish Jane the very best as she continues to develop her public speaking skills on the global stage and uses her voice to inspire positive change.

This international tournament, held in Quebec, attracts top young hockey talent from around the world, making Nathan’s accomplishment all the more impressive. The team’s victory represents countless hours of training, dedication, and teamwork.

Maths Team Triumph: DCSL Students Crowned Champions at HSTM 2025

We are delighted to announce that Dulwich College Seoul students Kunho J, Daniel S, and Lucas S (Year 11) have achieved an outstanding victory at the prestigious High School Team Maths Competition (HSTM) 2025 held in Suzhou on 7-8 March.

The talented trio not only secured the overall championship against 40 teams from 17 schools across 11 cities, but also clinched first place in both the Mathematician and Cryptography rounds. This remarkable achievement showcases the extraordinary mathematical aptitude, collaborative skills, and strategic thinking of our students in this prestigious international competition.

Kunho J, Daniel S, and Lucas S celebrating their victory at HSTM 2025

A Competition of Mathematical Excellence

HSTM, now in its 12th year, features six challenging segments designed to test students’ mathematical knowledge, collaborative problem-solving, strategic thinking, and creativity. The competition included traditional problem-solving rounds alongside innovative challenges such as Cryptography, Lightning, and Codebreaking that pushed participants to think quickly and work seamlessly as a team.

This year’s event also offered winners a “golden ticket” to the World Mathematics Championships finals at Imperial College London, providing our students with an exceptional opportunity to compete at the international level.

In Their Words: Reflections on Victory

For our students, the victory represents the culmination of dedicated preparation and excellent teamwork.

Kunho J reflects: “I’m thrilled to have won the competition with my friends. I believe the key to our victory was our collaborative spirit and strategic approach. I’m proud of how we communicated effectively and supported each other through challenges. It was such an incredible experience!”

Daniel S shares: “I’m absolutely thrilled we got to experience this incredible victory together. The countless mornings and late nights spent practicing in Suzhou were more than worth it—they truly showed me the magic of determination, the power of teamwork, and the strength of genuine friendship. Yes, our journey had its tough moments—times when the problems felt impossible, exhaustion crept in, and we wondered if we’d reached our limit. But our love for math kept us going, and it was this passion that transformed even the most stressful situations into unforgettable, laughter-filled memories.”

Lucas S adds: “Absolute wonderful experience gained by my friends and I. Throughout this successful trip, remarkable teamwork and collaboration skills lay the foundation of our victory. We bewildered, we struggled, we found our own way out. According to our team spirit, we always try to get the best result out of it, we’re not there to just sit second or sit third! Truly unbelievable, enjoyable experience, I would call the win, aftermath, simply, lovely.”

All three students expressed their sincere appreciation to the DCSL Mathematics Department and to Mr. Denning and Ms. Zou for their guidance and support throughout the competition.

Building Mathematical Leaders

The HSTM competition aligns perfectly with Dulwich College Seoul’s commitment to developing well-rounded students who excel not only academically but also in their ability to collaborate, communicate effectively, and tackle complex challenges with confidence.

As Daniel S aptly states, “I wholeheartedly recommend every aspiring mathematician with a passion for problem-solving to participate in this competition—it’s truly an unforgettable experience that fuels your love for math even further!”

The team’s victory among approximately 200 participants from across Asia demonstrates the strength of our mathematics program and the exceptional talent of our students. We look forward to following their continued success as they advance to further mathematical challenges.

Congratulations to Kunho J, Daniel S, and Lucas S on this outstanding achievement!

Concern Worldwide Inspires Year 6 and Year 8 Students

Last week, our Year 6 and Year 8 students had the privilege of welcoming representatives from Concern Worldwide into school for an engaging and thought-provoking talk on their mission to tackle No Poverty and Zero Hunger.

For Year 6, this visit directly connected to their work in the Model United Nations (MUN), where they had been researching SDG 2: Zero Hunger and debating real-world solutions to global food insecurity. The session deepened their understanding of the challenges faced by communities worldwide and the actions needed to create sustainable change.

Meanwhile, our Year 8 students linked this discussion to their SDG 1: No Poverty rotation project, where they explored the root causes of poverty and its impact on education, health, and opportunity. Hearing firsthand about Concern Worldwide’s work reinforced the importance of advocacy and action in achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Inspired by this visit, the school is now working towards organising a fundraising initiative in Term 3 to support Concern Worldwide’s vital efforts. More details will be shared soon—watch this space for how you can get involved!

Prestigious Good Schools Guide Review of Dulwich College Seoul

We are delighted to announce that Dulwich College Seoul has been reviewed by the Good Schools Guide, one of the most respected independent publications for school reviews worldwide.

The Good Schools Guide is known for its thorough, candid assessments based on extensive interviews with students, parents, and staff. Unlike marketing materials, these reviews offer prospective families an impartial perspective on what makes each school unique.

In their comprehensive review of our College, the Guide highlighted several strengths that define our community:

  • Our culture of kindness that “runs through every vein” of the school
  • The strong relationships between students and teachers
  • Our balanced approach to academics and wellbeing
  • The vibrant community atmosphere that makes new families feel immediately welcome
  • Our exceptional facilities and resources that support learning

We were particularly touched by one parent’s description quoted in the review that our school is “not too big, too small, but just right,” capturing the ideal balance we strive to maintain.

The review concludes that “with its strong academics, fabulous resources and a rock solid community, the Dulwich ‘soul’ will have you hooked from the off.”

This external validation reflects the collective efforts of our entire community – students, parents, and staff – in creating an exceptional learning environment where children can thrive. We are grateful to everyone who contributed to the review process and who continues to make Dulwich College Seoul such a special place.

For those interested in learning more about what the Good Schools Guide had to say about our school, the full review is available here.

Quality Assurance Visit: Celebrating Our Strengths and Identifying Growth Opportunities

Last week, we welcomed a Quality Assurance team led by Nick Magnus, Head of Dulwich College Singapore, along with leaders from other schools in our network. The visit focused specifically on how we cater for the individual needs of our students through personalisation and differentiation, an area we’ve identified for strategic development in the coming years.

Key Strengths Celebrated Across the College

The QA team highlighted numerous strengths across all sections of the school:

Strong Relationships and Positive Culture:

  • Teachers and staff know our students exceptionally well
  • A clear, embedded culture of kindness exists throughout the school
  • Students feel secure and confident to take risks in their learning
  • Parents noted that “above all else, their children are happy here”

Student Agency and Engagement:

  • Students demonstrate ownership of their learning journey
  • Collaborative learning thrives through effective peer support
  • Students enjoy autonomy in how they complete tasks
  • Learners are motivated by our merit system and recognition

Supportive Learning Environment:

  • Resource-rich classrooms with effective visual learning supports
  • Teaching assistants are effectively utilized to support learning
  • Students report high levels of support, particularly before assessments
  • Active classrooms that encourage engagement and collaboration

Reflective Questions for Future Growth

The QA team also provided thoughtful reflective questions to guide our future development:

  • How can we balance teacher-led instruction with student-centered approaches to increase learner agency?
  • How can we ensure classroom materials consistently support personalised learning experiences?
  • How can the good practice in questioning be shared more widely to activate deeper thinking?
  • Where are opportunities for a more structured approach to translanguaging?
  • How might technology be better utilized to support differentiation?

These insights will help inform our strategic planning as we continue to enhance personalized learning across the College. We are grateful to the QA team for their thorough and constructive feedback, and to our students, staff, and parents who participated in discussions during the visit.
