Senior School

We have had another remarkable week at school, filled with opportunities to live our values of diversity, excellence, community, sustainability, and kindness. Each day brought new experiences that showcased the strength and spirit of our students as global citizens.

Everyone was incredibly impressed with the four Year 7 students Evelyn, Jayden, Elizabeth and Erin who performed at the BCCK Garden Party at the British Embassy on Tuesday evening. Their courage, skill, and collaboration shone through, making it a proud moment for our school. It was a lovely event, offering a wonderful opportunity to connect with the wider community and learn more about the UK’s continued commitment to its relationship with South Korea.

A standout event this week was the attendance of our Middle School students at the 2024 Homeless World Cup, hosted by FIFA. This experience was a prime example of social change in action. The students were able to connect with the players and organisers, and they were deeply impressed by the energy, enthusiasm, and respect demonstrated by all the teams. It was a powerful reminder of the importance of kindness, community, and using sport as a platform to inspire social change.

In honour of World Peace Week, we were privileged to welcome Ilwha Choe, who gave an enigmatic and moving talk about her journey from North Korea. Leaving at the age of 14, Ilwha shared the immense challenges she faced and her journey to reconnect with her family. Her story of perseverance solidified her passion for working with LINK (Liberty in North Korea), where she continues to advocate for change. Her message resonated deeply with our students, highlighting the values of resilience, kindness, and the power of community in the pursuit of peace.

We are proud to announce the Middle and High School Student Council Representatives for the term of October to February. This week, representatives were chosen across year groups, and we are excited about the work they will undertake. The councils, facilitated by Gemma Fullagar (Middle School), Ade Okeowo (High School), and Emma Chamberlain (IBDP), will play an integral role in the master planning for the school and serve as a conduit for student voices. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to actively participate in shaping our school’s future, reinforcing our commitment to excellence and community.

Our IB students are currently busy writing applications for the Head Student and House Leader positions, which will be interviewed in October. We are impressed with the passion and dedication they have shown in their applications so far. These leadership roles are an excellent platform for students to develop their skills and contribute to the school in meaningful ways, demonstrating their commitment to both personal and academic excellence.

Thank you to everyone who attended the Mandarin at DCSL Parent Workshop yesterday. It was wonderful to see such a strong interest in the language programme, which is a key part of our commitment to diversity. We look forward to welcoming many of you to the upcoming e-safety workshop on 2 October 12.30-1.30pm Tech Hub (2F). This session will focus on keeping your children safe online and providing practical advice to navigate the digital world securely. Recent news in Korea has highlighted the growing concerns around the use of AI to generate inappropriate content, raising the importance of online safety for children.

Key Questions we will address:

  • How can I protect my child from online predators?
  • What are the risks of social media, and how can I mitigate them?
  • How can I limit my child’s screen time without causing conflict?

Join us to explore these risks in detail and learn practical steps to ensure your child stays safe online. Let’s work together to equip our children with the knowledge and skills for a positive digital experience. Please RSVP here

As the weather begins to change, we will be transitioning to our winter uniform starting the week of 14 October. This will include the addition of ties and blazers as part of the formal dress code. We kindly remind all students and families to ensure that uniforms are in accordance with the school’s guidelines. We appreciate your support in maintaining our standard of excellence and presenting a unified, professional appearance across the school community.

Next Week’s Highlights:

Looking ahead, we have some exciting events planned for next week.

Unique opportunity to participate in an exclusive entrepreneurial ECA.

We will be celebrating the European Week of Languages with a series of activities designed to promote diversity and multilingualism. Our students will engage in language-based games, cultural exchanges, and discussions, all aimed at fostering a greater appreciation for the richness of European languages and cultures.

In addition, preparations for Sports Day on the 10 October will be in full swing. Our PE department is working hard to ensure that this much-anticipated event is both fun and competitive, while reflecting our values of excellence, community, and sustainability. Students will be training and getting ready to showcase their athletic skills in a variety of events. We encourage everyone to bring their energy and enthusiasm to what promises to be an exciting day!

SSAEM Peer Mentoring

The Year 12 and Year 13 students are re-introducing the new SSAEM peer mentoring program for this term!

‘SSAEM’, which roughly translates to ‘tutor’ in Korean vernacular, is designed to help younger students (Year 7 to Year 11) with academics and other things relating to the senior school. It can be a great way to gain insight into IB students’ perspectives on school and also to discuss topics that are more suitable for a mature student body.

Mentees will be joined up as either single sessions (one mentor and one mentee) or double sessions (one mentor and two mentees), depending on the mentees’ choices. Scheduling for meetings will happen individually via email between the mentors and the mentees, which can happen anytime from lunchtime to 4.30pm after school.

For students wishing to become mentees for this term, please fill out this form.

We look forward to seeing more students sign up!
