Primary School

Dear Primary Families,

Many thanks to the multiple parents and caregivers who were able to come into school this week for our workshops. Our aim is to help adults at home grow in their knowledge of our programmes and expectations of their children at different ages and stages. We have a great turnout for our weekly workshops and if you cannot see a topic you’d love to engage with, please do let me know.

Nursery and Reception Breaktimes:

We have added in a scheduled break for Nursery and Reception each morning. This will enable all students to go outside to play together in the morning as they also do at lunchtime. Our new schedules this year have meant we can have an ‘altogether playtime’ which is terrific for our little ones social skills.

Autumn Hikes 2024

Each autumn and spring, the Primary School head out onto the wooded hills around Seoul to enjoy the trees as they change and to spot other seasonal aspects. Please see recent communications from your Year Leader for the date and equipment list for your child. Staff will also let parents who how many ‘helpers’ are needed – hope you can come along.

Hike shoes: school PE shoes are perfect, or hiking boots (plimsols, Keds, Converse etc are not suitable).

DCSL is a Nut-Free Zone:

We have a very strict ‘no-nuts policy’ as we have children and adults on campus who are mildly to severely allergic to nuts.

Nuts of any sort are banned from campus for all snacks, lunches, trips, residentials, parent events etc. This includes peanuts, nut butters, Nutella, mixed nut cereal bars, trail mixes and so on.

Thank you for helping protect our community.

Menu for lunches and snacks:

Please find here the menu for the month.

Winter Uniform:

All students will begin to wear full winter uniform during our uniform transition week (Monday 14 – Friday 18 October). Long sleeved DCSL uniform shirts (not short sleeved) and long trousers (not shorts) must be worn. Juniors wear their ties neatly, and while blazers are optional Monday to Thursday, they are compulsory on Fridays as we have our Assembly then. All clothing items should be Dulwich uniform – non-uniform waistcoats and jumpers etc. are not permitted to be worn for class. All shoes must be fully black (no coloured or while trim, laces, soles etc).

FOD Coffee Morning from 8.20am-9.45am Thursday 10 October

The next Social Coffee Morning & Used Books and Uniform Sales will be held on Thursday, 10 October, from 8.20am till 9.45am.

International Maths Challenge – Online Simulated Maths Challenge (OSMC) 23-24 November 2024

All Primary School students are eligible to take part in the International Maths Challenge. This year, we are a selected school for the Online Simulated Maths Challenge (OSMC). The referral code for the OSMO is: DCS@IMO More information and registration are directly through their website. If you have any questions or queries regarding the running of the competition, timings, certificates etc., please check the information on their website or contact the IMC on the ‘contact us’ page on their website: Is your child from a Selected School? – International Maths Challenge (international-maths-challenge.com) This is an optional event if you would like to give your child a challenge in maths . We suggest choosing the grade level below your child’s year group e.g. Year 6 = Grade 5. However, it is your choice which grade level you sign your child up for. Registration deadline is 17 November.

Halloween at DCSL:

Many of our community are aware of the dreadful crush tragedy in Itaewon during Halloween 2022. Last year we decided to forgo Halloween celebrations out of respect for the victims and their families. This year we will do the same. This will be reviewed for 2025. Students will be made aware through staff chats and Assembly. Thank you for your understanding.

House Tug of Wars This Week:

Congratulations to our newly elected House Captains for leading a storming House Tug of War. The competition was fierce (but kind!) with students and parents battling through rounds of contests to figure out who were the champions! Shackleton reigned supreme on the day!

Homeless World Cup

Year 6 students, along with 20 Senior School peers, recently had the opportunity to visit the Homeless World Cup at Hanyang University. This unique event not only showcased the power of sport but also served as an inspiring way to support the community service component of the Year 6 Award. Players from around the world, each with their own stories of resilience and dedication, shared how they have contributed to their communities. One such story came from Giselle, a USA player, who works closely with an organisation in her home country that helps support those in need, embodying the spirit of giving back that the students aim to foster.

As part of our commitment as a school to support local and global communities, we proudly sponsored one of the second round group games. The match between Romania and Kenya was fantastic to watch and inspired two of our Year 6 children to write a match report:

Year 6 Cheers as Romania Secures Thrilling 7-4 Win Over Kenya at Homeless World Cup

The match kicked off on pitch 2 of the Homeless World Cup, Match Day 4. Romania inspired us all with a stunning performance, winning 7-4 against Kenya.

Kenya made a quick impact as one of their players slid in and scored within the first minute. This early lead fired up the Romanian team, and in a matter of minutes, they responded with two goals, taking control of the game. Kenya fought back with another goal to make it 2-2.

But then, Romania was on fire! Their strong captain, wearing number 6, led by example, scoring multiple goals and inspiring her teammates. The Romanian goalkeeper also impressed everyone with her superb defending, making crucial saves that kept Kenya at bay. Despite Kenya’s hard work, they couldn’t break through Romania’s solid defence.

It was clear that many in the crowd were supporting Kenya, who wore red, but many also cheered for Romania, proudly wearing their bright yellow jerseys mixed with blue and red. Even with the crowd behind them, Kenya found it tough to get past Romania’s strong defence and relentless attack.

In the second half, Romania continued their dominance, scoring four more goals to secure a 7-4 victory. Kenya kept pushing, scoring two more goals, but it wasn’t enough to close the gap. Romania’s right-winger and goalkeeper were standouts, and it was clear that without the brilliant Romanian keeper, Kenya might have had a chance to win.

FULL TIME!

In the end, Romania won by three goals in what was an exciting and competitive match. It was a fantastic game to watch, and though Kenya worked very hard, Romania’s superior teamwork and defence sealed the victory.
