From our Head of College

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I hope you had a restful Seollal holiday. This week, I had the opportunity to share a piece of my personal history with our Year 5 students in the auditorium – delving into the fascinating world of archaeology. Before joining the field of education, I embarked on many adventures as an archaeologist in Iceland, uncovering the layers of our past. We explored the role of archaeologists and the significance of their work in understanding human history. Engaging with the students’ eager curiosity was a joy, and it was a privilege to introduce them to the intriguing science of archaeology.

I trust you have received important information regarding the re-enrolment process for the academic year 2023-2024 at Dulwich College Seoul. You will glad to know we have changed the process this year so that no action is required if you are planning on returning next academic year. Only those families who are not returning next academic year are asked to fill out the survey by Friday, 31 March 2023. Your prompt action is appreciated as we prepare for another exciting and enriching year ahead.

Our annual school photography sessions are swiftly approaching, and we’re excited to capture the spirit and growth of our students from Monday 26 February to Thursday 29 February 2024. Family Day Studio, the vendor used last year to great results, will be on campus to take individual and class photographs, offering both formal and casual styles. For those interested in sibling photographs, please remember to book your slot in advance. It’s important that students adhere to the uniform requirements specified for their year group and looks smart and well-groomed to ensure a smooth photo day experience. For more details on the schedule, uniform requirements, and how to sign up for sibling photos, please refer to the comprehensive email sent earlier today.

Please save the date for an enlightening IB Global Education Forum at 10am on Saturday, 9 March 2024, where Dulwich families and friends can delve into the benefits of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) for their children. This special event, set in our dedicated IB Centre, will feature insights from our Leadership Team and IB students, showcasing how the IBDP prepares students for university and beyond. With discussions on supporting your child’s learning journey and first-hand testimonials, it’s an invaluable opportunity to understand the holistic education offered at Dulwich College Seoul. All parents and students are welcome. Stay tuned for an official invitation soon.

Due to popular demand, we have extended the deadline to RSVP for another exciting event, our “Meet Our Alumni” parent workshop, scheduled for Tuesday 20 February at 2.30pm in our IB Centre. This event is an opportunity for parents of all year groups to connect with our alumni and gain first-hand knowledge on guiding their children through Senior School and into the future. Our speakers, including accomplished alumni and key members of our leadership, will share personal stories, offer advice, and discuss the impact of our One Family of Schools. Don’t miss out on this chance to empower your child’s educational journey. RSVP here, by no later than Monday 19 February. I’m very much looking forward to hearing from our stellar group of committed alumni.

The Friends of Dulwich (FoD) are seeking enthusiastic volunteers to help with various events, from coffee mornings to our annual Gala. Your time is invaluable to us, and any amount you can offer makes a real difference. We invite you to join our volunteer chat group to stay updated on upcoming opportunities and continue building our school community. Please see the FoD section of this update for more information.

Several Senior School year groups will go on ski trips next week and we’re excited to host the South African Ambassador to South Korea, Her Excellency Ms Zenani Nosizwe Dlamini on Friday when she will be speaking to our students. She happens to be the daughter of anti-apartheid activist and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Nelson Mandela. Last but not least, I look forward to seeing you at the FoD Gala next Friday, sporting your best 1920’s gear and festive spirit!

With my best wishes,

Mr Guðmundur Hegner Jónsson
